What to Expect
"Sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up."
- Brene Brown
Not many people know what to expect at their first therapy appointment, and the unknown can be scary. I want to make the first visit comfortable and easy, so here are a few good points to know:
General
The intake session is my chance to meet you and discover your strengths, get to know your background, your goals for therapy and develop a relationship to guide the therapeutic direction. I want to know a number of details about you, but the most common first question I will ask is “So, what brings you to therapy?” You can answer this questions however you want, in as much detail as you need.
Psychotherapy is the general term for treating mental health problems by talking with a mental health professional. It is an opportunity to discuss issues that are important to you, the client, while having a trained objective person help work through concerns. Therapy can be about one specific problem, or it can be about multiple. Therapy is a collaborative event, it requires an active role from both the client and the therapist for change to occur.
There are too many benefits of participating in therapy to list! Some benefits can include, boosting confidence, improving communication skills, learning new coping skills, managing your feelings, or attaining a better understanding of yourself. Progress in therapy comes in many forms and I know and believe everyone expresses in different ways – verbally and physically. We’ll learn how to measure your progress together!
The return on investment and value for therapy is often immeasurable. Its goal is to support meaningful improvement in your life, relationships, health, family, and overall well-being. We want therapy to be an accessible resource for all.We are in network with the following insurance network providers: BCBS PPO/Blue Choice, UBH/Optum, Cigna, Aetna, and Lyra.
Depending on your specific insurance provider or employee benefit plan, therapy services may be covered in full or in part. We encourage you to contact your provider directly to verify how your plan covers outpatient psychotherapy services. Helpful questions to ask your insurance provider:Does my health insurance plan include mental benefits?Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it, and have I met it yet? What would be my co-pay or co-insurance?Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? Are telehealth/virtual therapy sessions covered?Do I need prior authorization before starting therapy?
If you are unable to attend a scheduled session, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. We understand that life happens and unexpected situations can arise. If possible, we're always happy to work with you to reschedule your appointment. That said, your appointment time has been reserved specifically for you, and it often cannot be filled on short notice. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice (or missed without notice) may be subject to a $75 cancellation fee.We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as this policy helps us provide timely care to all of our clients.
